The Tomb of National Heroes at the Belgrade Fortress was once again targeted by hooligans who drew graffiti on this cultural monument during the previous night.
By joint engagement of the city services, the graffiti will, in accordance with the weather conditions, be removed from this – one of the most important monuments at the Belgrade Fortress, at the earliest convenience.
The Tomb of National Heroes was erected in 1948. The busts of Đura Đaković (1886–1929), Ivan Milutinović (1901–1944) and Ivo Lola Ribar (1916–1943) are the work of the sculptor Stevan Bodnarov and date back to 1949. In 1957, Moša Pijade (1890-1957) was also buried at this spot and his bust is the work of sculptor Slavoljub Stanković.
By the Decision of the Assembly of the City of Belgrade, the Tomb of National Heroes was declared a cultural monument in 1983.
PE Belgrade Fortress wishes to remind everyone that the monuments at the Belgrade Fortress serve to preserve the memory of the long and turbulent history of the city, which must be nurtured, and uses this opportunity to appeal to all visitors not to desecrate monuments and not to destroy the cultural heritage of the City of Belgrade – our pride before the world.
