Completed works2020

Reconstruction of the Sahat and Baroque Gate Complex

At the beginning of November 2020, the extensive remodelling works to revitalise the southeastern ramparts of the Upper Town of Belgrade Fortress and to transform the Sahat Gate and the Baroque Gate complex into a visitor centre were completed.

The works included the reconstruction of the interior of the Baroque Gate – a space that used to be the Gallery of Belgrade Fortress but was no longer in use due to water damage. With the reconstruction of the Sahat Gate, the central passage through the gate was restored and a newly acquired room within was renovated. As a result, the unique and multifunctional visitor centre – with a total area of around 300m2 – was created.

The works included the static renovation of the vantage point wall located on the hillside – micropiles were used as a method of remediation. Stone slabs were dismantled from the path below the vantage point and a new functional staircase was built, connecting the area near the vantage point with the path underneath the vantage point.

Reconstruction and Restoration of Despot’s Gate

In October 2020, the works on the reconstruction and restoration of the outer gate and inner side walls were completed, as well as their static stabilisation.

The lower part of the portal of the outer gate and the inner side walls were very damaged, with visible cracks and falling stone material. The stability of the outer gate was also endangered.

The works were performed in two phases. The first phase included static remediation, while the second phase included conservation and restoration works.
