Big Staircase Descent

Blog

Big Staircase Descent is now the shortest communication between ports on the Sava River and Upper fortifications. Built in the middle of the 18th century during the Turkish reconstruction of the fortress. It is located in the outer ditch of the fortress, which was rebuilt with two caponiers containing arched passes. At the lowest part, the communication that leads to the Dark Gate, there was a partition built over which was a wooden blockhouse where the fortress guards stays. Remains of this building today can be seen only as a part a of the wall passage to the top of the stairs. Big Staircase Descent was restored in 2005.
