In the period of extensive works on reconstruction of the Belgrade Fortress, between 1717 and 1736, a new gate was built at the place of the Inner Stambol Gate. Based on the project of Nicolas Doxat de Morez, the gate was a part of the newly built Southeast front.
The basis of the gate is symmetrical, and rooms are placed laterally next to the main extended passage. The gate immediately became the main fort gate on the Constantinople road and it still is. Research at the gate has been done on several occasions since 1963 and the restoration of the main facade with the moisture remediation was carried out in 2003.
Revitalization project, developed by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, includes work on the gate’s interior together with the lateral rooms, which are intended to be an Old-crafts Workshop and a Gallery. The works were estimated at 5,163,315 dinars.
The works were completed in September 2008. In December 2008, several new facilities were open: Old-crafts Workshop, Gift Shop and Gallery of the Belgrade Fortress.
