The Genius of Death

Blog

Decorative statue for the pylon “The Genius of Death” by sculptor Ivan Meštrović was created just before the big International Show in Rome in 1911. For that occasion, Serbia had a national pavilion made in a villa Julia, where the most important artists of our region exhibited their works.

Meštrović’s idea was to have the statue “The Genius of Death” placed as a pylon in front of the Pavilion.
The sculpture was exhibited in Opovo by 2011. Following advice of the National Museum, it was moved to the Little Kalemegdan, mainly because of better conditions for protection.
