Main Guards Building

Blog

The building, which housed the command of the Belgrade Fortress – the Main Guard Building, was erected during the Austrian reconstruction of the fortress during the thirties of the eighteen century. Sultan Mahmud I (1730-1754) subdued Belgrade once again to Turkish power, and he added flanking galleries and a minaret, turning the building into a mosque. There were kept numerous Arabic books and scripts. All travel writers who passed through Belgrade at the nineteenth century mentioned it as a mosque in the Upper Town. During Serbian governance over the Fortress from 1807 to 1813, Karadjordje ordered to store the seized Turkish flags here. After the liberation, the Serbs kept munitions in this building, which years after exploded causing irreversible damages to the mosque.
