The Belgrade Fortress is a layered and very intricate monumental complex that was built over a long period of time from the 1st to the 18th century. Its origin and development are an inalienable part of the history of Belgrade. All the development stages of the city have left their traces among the cultural layers of the Fortress, thus turning it into a rich treasury of the past. Many periods of the dynamic history of Belgrade have been enriched with knowledge and saved from oblivion thanks to the data provided by the archaeological research of the Fortress.

The first archeological excavations of the Belgrade Fortress began in 1936. To date, results have been achieved that not only have their scientific dimension, but also reveal new characters of “the most famous city on the Danube”, as Belgrade was called in the past due to the importance of the sum of its functions.

The catalog “Archeology of the Belgrade Fortress” was published along with the exhibition of the same name, which closed the event “European Heritage Days 2018”.
