Restoration of the Sava Slope Bastion

Blog

PE `Belgrade Fortress` has finished restoration work on the Sava Slope Bastion. The City of Belgrade has provided 29.9 million dinars for this project.

The Sava Slope Bastion was built in the mid 18th century, as part of the new fortifications of the South-East Front. It had been preserved in its original shape until World War I, when it gradually started to deteriorate.

As a part of preparatory conservational and restoration work in 2008, archaeological research had to be done in order to find the remains of the Outer South Rampart, to define the primary terrain levels and to get the details of the Bastion’s architecture. Complete renovation of the Sava Slope Bastion is the aim of the restoration works. This process requires returning it to the original state from the mid 18th century and also reconstructing the watch tower.
