Nebojsa Tower – 2010.

Blog

The project of revitalization, conservation and reutilization of Nebojša Tower is the biggest and the most demanding project in the field of heritage preservation and protection in Serbia.

Nebojša Tower, a monument of great cultural and historical significance, has lost its function and usage from the previous centuries. It has been empty and closed for public, representing only the time that is long behind us.

It is a real pioneer attempt to reconstruct it and make it functional again, adjusting it to modern conditions, yet preserving the authenticity of the Tower. It has been a big challenge and a very difficult task to ensure structure, protect it from flooding and groundwater, while modernizing the space and including it in the cultural life of Belgrade. This kind of intervention on cultural monuments is a pioneer project, the first of its kind in Serbia and the region.

End of the construction and successful implementation of this large and very complex project shows that it is possible to bring in the content, without jeopardizing the monument but preserving its authenticity.

Thanks to the donation of the Republic of Greece the Tower, Coastal rampart and the Water Gate were restored. Approximately RSD 190 million was allocated for the works on Nebojša Tower, of which Greece has donated 1,340,800 euros. The City of Belgrade allocated RDS 42 million, and PE “Belgrade Fortress” has invested about RSD 24 million.

Works to revitalize the building began in June 2009 and completed in May 2010.

Conservation and restoration works of the Tower, the Coastal rampart and the Water Gate have been finalized. Project documentation is completely done by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute of Republic of Serbia and the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade, with the consultancy services of the Archaeological Institute of SANU. Contractor of the works is a company “Koto” from Belgrade.
