Queen Simonida visiting Belgrade

Archbishop Danilo talked about a visit of Queen Simonida to his brother-in-law Dragutin and his wife Katarina. Queen Simonida, accompanied by many nobles and with the approval of her husband the Serbian King Milutin, arrived in Belgrade most probably in 1315. She was welcomed with many gifts and honours by Dragutin, Serbian nobles, and envoys of the Hungarian King Charles Robert.

At that time, Belgrade had a big Orthodox Cathedral Church, probably built between 1284 and 1315. Simonida bowed to the icon of the Holy Virgin, which was considered to be miraculous and also the town’s biggest sanctity since the 1170s. After the festivities, which lasted “many days”, Simonida decided to visit the tomb of Queen Jelena together with Dragutin’s wife, marking the end of her visit to Belgrade.
