Belgrade –“Merry Town”

During twenty years of Austrian rule, Belgrade became a “Merry Town”. More than two hundred inns were opened, and four breweries were working to their full capacity. The most famous inns were “Red Rooster”, “Red Ox”, “Five Larks” and “Three Rabbits”, while the most notorious was “At Two Bulls”. In one of his reports to the Royal Council from 1731, General Marulli complained that “every villain who comes here, rents a room, buys a barrel or two of beer or buys them on tick…”.The atmosphere in Belgrade was even merrier because of a number of women, who had lost their husbands, brothers, fathers or property in the war, but had to live on something.
