Roman Well

A mystery surrounding the Roman well attracted adventurers who sought to reach its bottom. In 1855, Rome Zmorski headed into such an adventure, later remarking: “In recent years there has never been any need for using the well. It has never happened to me to meet anyone who would at least out of curiosity try to go down. Being faithful to the task of a passenger, I wanted to do it, so I managed twice to go down deep enough in that cold, black as night, eternal abyss, but every time my lantern was put out by a strong current forcing me on a very hard and fruitless effort of returning. Finally, I was forced to give up the project threatening to get my neck broken.”
