Jaksic`s Tower

Blog

The protruding cannon tower of the Eastern suburbs of the Lower Town is named after the Jaksic brothers, medieval nobles known from folklore and heroic epic songs. It was built at the beginning of the second half of the 15th century, with 15 positions for cannons that defended the northern approach to the city. The Jaksic Tower was connected to the suburbs by an underground corridor that, unfortunately, was largely remodeled during its reconstruction.

In the wars at the end of the 17th century, the tower was partially demolished and built into newer fortifications. Its remains were excavated in 1936, after which it was completely reconstructed. Although the reconstruction of the tower was built on top of the discovered remains, the external treatment of the walls, as well as the arrangement of the windows and cannon openings, were performed arbitrarily.

In terms of shape and function, the Jaksic Tower is identical to the Nebojsa Tower in the port, only it is proportionally smaller.

Archaeological excavations of the Belgrade Fortress practically began with the excavation of the Jaksic Tower in 1936.
