Small descending stairway

Blog

In november 2010. PE „Belgrade Fortress“ has finished work on the Small descending stairway together with the inner ditch at the Belgrade Fortress. The City of Belgrade has provided 26.3 million dinars for this project.

Before constuction works, Small descending stairway, was unsafe and almost unusable and was the last severely damaged part of the Belgrade Fortress. Restoration work has completely renovated the whole Stairway and the surrounding area, which have been renovated historic communication links at the Belgrade Fortress.

The original condition of this part of the Belgrade Fortress – the area of the south-west fortress front on the Sava slope- has been significantly changed by interventions done on park design in the first half of the twentieth century, especially when the Sava promenade and the Big Staircase were built in 1928. This relatively landscaped area was damaged during the bombing of Belgrade in 1944, and the biggest part of it remained neglected during the second half of the twentieth century.

Extensive work in conservation and restoration of this area started in 2006 with the reconstruction of the Big descending stairway with the inner ditch, and continued with the restoration of the Dark Gate bastion.

Historical connection between the Upper and the Lower Town is re-established by repairing the Small descending stairway.
