Blog

PE `Belgrade Fortress` has finished conservational works of the remains of the Arsenal – Cannon Foundry, the inner and the outer curtain walls of the Lower Town of the Belgrade Fortress. The City of Belgrade has provided funds of 3.6 million RSD for this project.

Many remains of the big Austrian Arsenal built somewhere around 1725, relatively well preserved, have been found during the works conducted at the area in front of the Nebojša Tower. Karađorđe`s Cannon Foundry was situated there during the First Serbian Uprising. The Arsenal was torn down at the end of the 19th century, with no apparent reason, and all the building material was taken away.

Based on the available information, it is believed that the parts of the building’s base walls were taken out as well. The Cannon Foundry building, 92 metres wide and 92 metres long, is located at the Lower Town. It goes under the Lower Town Boulevard, and its corner has been found at the plateau in front of the Nebojša Tower. Additional archaeological research has been conducted, since well preserved pieces were found. Based on the findings and the measures of technical protection proposed by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute of Serbia, it is come to the conclusion that restoration and conservation of the remains of the Arsenal – Cannon Foundry will be conducted, in order to protect and present the discovered part of the building.
