Association of Fortresses and Remnants of Fortified Towns in Serbia, was established at the Regular Conference of Cities and Municipalities on 14 February 2007, and initiated by PE ‘Belgrade Fortress’.

The aim of establishment is to:

– Introduce these monuments of culture to the public,

– Determine the condition of the monuments and suggest the revitalization plan

– Initiate the conservation and restorations works

– Include the monuments into the country’s tourist potential.

The start-up meeting was held on 20 June 2007 in the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Belgrade. The workgroup, formed by the representatives from Novi Sad, Zvecan, Smederevo, Novi Pazar and Belgrade was established. It was agreed to begin with mutually accepted activities. One of the prime activities is printing the publications about the each of the monuments separately. The first constitutive meeting of Association of Fortresses and remains of fort cities in Serbia was held on May 23 2008 in the Institute of Archaeology in the Lower Town of the Belgrade Fortress. Among the 25 municipalities with the remains of forts, twenty members of the Association, officially appointed by local government, attended the meeting.
